Xavier saw a young woman that lounged on the portico of a low cost roadside drab bungalow. She appeared to be in deep thought. He studied her surreptitiously. A young man walked past, whilstXavier he sat on the ground at the gate and entered the bungalow. He had a few sharp words with thewoman and walked into the building. This must be them, Xavier surmised. He stood up slowly like asif it were painful to do so (he had to act the part whether someone was watching or not) and slowlyshuffled to the house and stood at the bottom of the few steps leading to the veranda. He waitedpatiently, half bent over and wiping the sweat from his face with a not too clean rag."Who are you?" Tanya had noticed him and turned to investigate.

"I don't know my name - I am lost. Please could you give me some water?"She poured water into his cupped hands and he drank by channeling the water into his mouth."What do you mean you don't know? Don't you know who you are?"

"No. I dunno who I am, where I come from, where I 'm, or what m'name is.""Did you have an accident...you know, lose your memory?"

"I dunno."

"Do you have any money?"

"No. But some peoples gives me food...y'know."

"Would you like some food?"

"I dunno - I'm no hungry...I musta eat somethin. But I not refuse food."He sat on the ground and ate food off a platter and drank from a steel tumbler. He ate hungrily, burped loudly and washed his mouth out with the water left in the tumbler.Mandeep called loudly from inside, "Tanya, where are you?"

Xavier kept his head down. This doubly confirmed that he had the right people.Mandeep came out on to the veranda, "What's going on?"

Tanya told him. He listened nodding his head.

"Okay, nameless man, you can go off now. There isn't more we can do for you."Xavier bowed his head, joined his hands and thanked them respectfully before shuffling off.Fifteen minutes later Mandeep followed. He could be a Police mole he said to Tanya. When hereached the market place he espied Xavier sitting on the curb eating gram out of a paper cone madefrom old newspaper. Mandeep hid behind the market crowd and watched him for a half hour and leftonly after Xavier rolled over, put his back to a low wall on the side of the curb and went to sleep. It would take a better man than Mandeep to catch Xavier out!
